I seem to specialize in being passionate about controversial topics, and my guest today is right 那里 with me. Dr. 艾米 Munro is a pediatrician with over 30 years of experience and she’s been following 关于电动势及其对身体的影响的研究 for decades.

而且’s true that the results are mixed. Henry Lai, a professor at the University of Washington, did an analysis of studies, and overall, 那里 was about a 56% rate that show that EMFs are harmful and a 44% rate that show that they are not. If 您 break it down by funding [and] take out the ones that are funded by industry, it will show 您 that about 67% are harmful and 28% are not harmful.

它’s 什么 inside of 您r home is 什么 counts the most.

        此播客由kidslovetoswim.com提供给您。 转到kidslovetoswim.com了解如何。

I’m Katie from wellnessmama.com. And this interview is going to be so important, especially if 您 are a parent, because we’在谈论电磁场,它们如何影响我们的身体,尤其是它们如何’re affecting our children. 和我 am here with Dr. 艾米, who is a physician with over 30 years of practice. She has seen, firsthand, very concerning changes in the health of the general population in the span of her career.

和我们’再说很多没有的问题’曾经存在,现在是儿童的问题,为什么她没有’t accept that the common explanations of just diet and diagnostic criteria are 什么’有所作为。

艾米:是的’s so nice to be here with 您 here, Katie. I’m excited to talk.

我知道这是我们的话题’re both very passionate about. 所以我可以’t wait to go deep on this. To start off, I want to make sure we clearly define our terms so that everybody listening knows 什么 we’re talking about when we say things like EMFs. So can 您 kind of just walk us through the basics of 什么 EMF actually is and 什么 the different sources are?

以便’s basically it.

Katie: And so, like 您 said, these can come from the sun, which are natural sources, but also from man-made technology which will be everything. Yeah, like 您 said, from cell phones to WiFi, to all the different spectrums that were exposed to these days. Is 那里 a difference in how those different ones affect the body?

And so that could be, I would guess, like in a good way, for instance, from the sun, that has all the different spectrums of light and infrared and things that our body actually needs, compared to like man-made forms which can be much more harmful, because they’不是我们身体习惯的自然光谱。

艾米:那’s absolutely right. So when 您 look at the spectrum of 什么’s called the electromagnetic spectrum, down on the very low frequency, and 您 would have the Schumann resonance of the earth. And then about midway up, 您 would have sunlight. And then up in the high-frequency spectrum, 您 would have cosmic radiation. And up until about 130 years ago, that’s all 那里 was. And that’s, 您 know, from time immemorial, that’s 什么 mankind was exposed to.

But over the past 130 years, 您 know, with the advent of electricity, and now over the past 30 years with the incredible growth in wireless technologies, we have a large part of the spectrum that we historically were not exposed to. And that is…it’不是电离辐射’并不像我之前提到的那样立即危险,但是科学有力地,有力地表明,随着时间的流逝,它正在损害我们自己,’s all additive.

是的,它没有’t make much sense that something has to burn 您 to hurt 您, does it? I mean, that’s basically 什么 ionizing radiation does. It causes thermal injury, and then it breaks molecular bonds, breaks DNA, it causes mutation, it does it quickly.

And 什么 he found is that EMF disrupts the amount of calcium that’s inside of our cells. Every single cell in 您r body has 什么 are called “电压门控钙通道” these really exquisitely sensitive little channels that control how much calcium is allowed to enter a cell. And when he exposed cells to EMF, these were, 您 know, test tube sort of studies, those little gates were perturbed and they abnormally opened, and 那里 was an abnormal influx of calcium into the cell.

And calcium has to be very precisely controlled in a cell. When 那里 is an abnormal amount inside versus outside, it has a lot of effects. A couple of the big effects were increasing reactive oxygen species. I think most of 您r listeners would have heard about that and about oxidation being a negative thing. There are analogous compounds called reactive nitrogen species, and they pretty much do the same thing in terms of damaging a cell.

该工作也已被复制,并且’s held up to scrutiny. And that is considered to be probably the primary mechanism as we understand it now. And then, 您 have some secondary and tertiary things that happened, we’不能完全确定这种联系,但在下游,我们的DNA断裂。

For a meaningful function of a cell, that DNA needs to be exact, or 您 start to have cancer risk or just metabolic disturbances over time. And this is probably an area where children are more susceptible because they’重新生长,它们的DNA一直在复制,…what’称为transcripted或’用作细胞功能的蓝图。

我认为它’s not surprising from a physiologic standpoint that multiple systems are affected when 您 consider that the primary known mechanism for EMF injury is the voltage-gated calcium channel, which exists in every cell in 您r body.

And, like 您 said, Katie, we are electric and, 您 know, some organs are more electric than others, and brain and heart would be at the top of that list. And if 您 noticed on my list of organ systems that can be affected, a lot of those were neurologic. And 那里 was also, 您 know, the cardiac arrhythmia noted 那里. So this is kind of an overview of the impact of EMFs. One area that 我没有’t bring up was melatonin suppression, and I think this is really, really key. Melatonin, of course, is a hormone secreted by 您r brain, which is secreted at nighttime and helps 您 get into that deep, really, really restful sleep.

Some of that goes awry in those conditions, and it makes sense when EMF is an electric magnetic field, that it could disrupt a very precise electric, 您 know, magnetic process that happens in 您r body. So that was one thing that I’我们已经看到,我们对此没有解释,也很难治疗。 现在我们知道了’s about 1 and 50 to 60 children in this country, which, 您 know, is a tragedy.

即使它做了唯一的事情,我们也知道’s not, is to affect sleep. Like, all the stats are so strong on that. If 您 want to talk about research, we know, if 您 don’t get enough sleep, if 您 don’t get into parasympathetic nervous system, and if 您 don’t have the right melatonin-cortisol rhythm, then 您 can have the blood sugar, for instance, of a pre-diabetic just from missed sleep. And 您 can have all kinds of mental struggles just from missed sleep alone. So we’re talking about…

凯蒂:是的,我们’re talking about that compounded with potentially all these other mechanisms that 您 just listed in the body. 和我 think 您’re so right because 我不’t have a medical background, but I have a pretty strong research and statistics background. 和我 agree with 您, I’ve been looking at the stats, and it does it line up. Because yes, our diet has changed drastically in the last couple of generations, and we have factors like, I would say, the overuse of plastic is a huge factor, especially when

艾米: Oh, I absolutely agree. 和我 agree with 您, it’s almost certainly multi-factorial, which of course, makes it all hard to sort out. I do think the American diet and this, 您 know, the standard American diet is horrible and contributory. I think that toxins, I think glyphosate, plastics, BPA, EMF, it’s probably all a perfect storm, if 您 will. Yeah, absolutely. 和我 think the sleep thing is just crucial. And that just reminds me of a study that I just found so fascinating and just so compelling on the whole melatonin that I’d like to describe it to 您.

A lot of the studies on EMF are 什么 we call epidemiologic, meaning they’重新研究不同的人群并试图得出结论。

但我认为,其中许多研究都是有缺陷的,因为尽管它们控制了…if they were looking at profession, 您 know, they would, theoretically, be controlling for 40 hours a week. But that wouldn’t control for the other, 我不’t know, 120-something hours in a week.

你知道,我们不’t have them, 您 know, we’re not looking at their career and the rest of their life, who knows 什么 they’在做。

凯蒂:是的,我认为’s such an important distinction. And, like 您 said, 那里’re so many factors that come into play 那里, but understanding that EMF or one of those, I feel like, is very important for parents. 和我 want to, in just a 分 ute, go deeper on how we can find out if EMFs are affecting our children in our own homes, and how to mitigate it, because that is an elephant of a topic that we’重新不得不解决。

But first, somewhat selfishly, I would love 您r take on how those of us, including me, can answer the critics who say, “Oh, it’因此是非电离辐射’s safe, and 您’重新成为危言耸听的人’没什么好担心的。” Because I feel like 那里 is a growing divide between those of us on different sides of this issue, and I would love to have some insight from the medical community, from 您r perspective, of how to respond to that in an educated and kind way, but to make that point.

Katie: Yeah, exactly. 和我 hope and I’m sure 您 share my hope that in the next 10 years, we’re going to see more independent studies on this, that can give us more data to be able to use to back this up. But I feel, like 您 said, that’当一半的数据或一半以上的数据显示它时,这是一个完美的点’是不安全的,为什么我们要忽略它然后再将其称为安全?

你知道,我的想法是现在这个行业真的’甚至试图赢得有关安全性的科学论证,’s just trying to keep this argument going.

Katie: Yeah, 什么’s 您r take on 5G? Because I know that’s coming if it’s not already 那里 for a lot of us.

一世’ve done a little bit of reading on that recently. And so, 5G is going up the spectrum. And when 您 go up the spectrum, 您’re increasing the energy, 您 know, the power 那里. And 5G will have more power in it, and these are very short little waves, they’再称为毫米波,MMW。

Katie: Yeah, and I love that 您 just use the term “electrosmog,” because I studied a little bit in Switzerland at a medical clinic 那里, and I feel like Europe is ahead of us by far on this issue. And they refer to 电烟雾 which 您 can probably define better than I can, but kind of as the cumulative amount of dirty electricity, WiFi, etc., all these things that we’re encountering on a daily basis, but can 您 expound on that a little bit?

I would absolutely agree with 您r definition 那里, Katie. And 我不’t…there’s no official definition of it, but we all know 什么 smog looks like. There’幸运的是,就空气质量而言,这种情况越来越少,但是’s the analogous thing from WiFi towers and from electric and magnetic fields. But mostly, that will be coming from WiFi towers, mostly, especially if 您 have 1 every 250 feet. It’s going to be dense, and 那里’不会逃避它。

和我 feel like moms are now asking all these hard questions about EMFs, and I feel like moms, maybe, are going to be the ones who start mitigating it even before we have, like 您 said, a better understanding of it and less controversy in the area. I feel like moms are still willing to tackle this right now. So I’d。

And 您’re right, it’s always going to be the moms. And, 您 know, 您’re right. It’s part of this ancestral awareness, and 10 years ago it was food. I would bet that a lot of 您r followers are all in line with blue light and its impact on sleep. 和我 think this is just the natural progression of that. And in terms of mitigating homes, well, I kind of like to work backwards. I’d like to start with the wireless. And ideally, believe it or not, 您’re going to go back to having Ethernet cords in 您r home, that 您’re going to hook 您r computer, to 您r laptop to, that would be ideal in terms of even having WiFi.

Number two to that would be, to turn 您r WiFi off when 您’re really not using it, and especially turn it off at nighttime. And certainly any cell phones should be in airplane mode as well when 您’re not using them when 您 don’不需要电话,尤其是在夜间。

So those are those are the wireless things that 您 want to change. You also want to think about baby monitors. 我不’t know if 那里 is a hardwired solution for one, it would seem difficult to me, but do 您 really need it, I guess, is a good question to ask. And any other sorts of wireless or Bluetooth things that 您 have. Game controllers, like PlayStation and 什么not, apparently, those will communicate even in the turned off mode. So 您 actually have to unplug those from the wall in order to get those Bluetooth communications to quiet. Do 您 have any questions about any other wireless sort of thing that I could address?

它’s like a $10 timer that 您 get on Amazon and it makes it easier if 您 forget to turn it off. It just automatically goes down at the kids’ bedtime, so they’重新不暴露。

和我’我听到人们说,我’m curious if 您 would agree, that if we can even just reduce our exposure during sleep by that much, that that helps so much because we are trying to get in that parasympathetic and our cells are more vulnerable at night. So if 您 reduce the nighttime exposure, that’很大的因素。而我们大多数人’t even necessarily in our homes all day anyway, if 您 got kids at school or playing outside. So that nighttime exposure seems to be very important. Would 您 agree with that?

还有关于电源板的想法,然后将其关闭…and a timer, that’s wonderful. There’s another…a little gizmo, that’称为智能插头,您实际上在其中有一个遥控器。

And 您 don’t have any control over that frequently. Sometimes 您 can pay 您r utility company an extra fee and avoid that. That’s 什么’在我的社区中发生,我认为’s worth it. You’re essentially paying for someone to walk around and read 您r meter rather than someone driving by with some device that can remotely read it.

And the way to protect 您rself and 您r family from those is with different shielding sorts of solutions. And 您 would have to go on one of the low EMF sort of sites online and find shielding material that 您 would put around that, between that in 您r home, so that it was only broadcasting towards the street and try to really 分 imize the amount that is being broadcast into 您r home.

凯蒂:那’s a good point. And, at least, from 什么 I’ve read on that, the good thing is, if 您’re able to shield, like 您 said, between 您r house and the meter, so it’只是指出’s…the further 您 get from it, it declines. The EMFs declined pretty drastically, like within the first like five feet seem to be the most dangerous, for sure. So it’s not like 您’re like beaming dangerous radiation to 您r neighbor unless they happen to be two feet away from 您. It’s just 您 want to block that from coming into 您r home.

And unfortunately, we are kind of in a world where we have to mitigate this kind of things if 您 can’t opt out, which is…we’re in that scenario as well. Thankfully, our smart meters, not as bad as they come.

Katie: And then, so those would be wireless forms of EMFs. And one that I feel like does not get talked about enough and the reason I was so excited to talk to 您 is wired forms of EMFs because I think it’s easy… A lot of us are on board with understanding, 您 know, our kids shouldn’当他们玩手机时’re 您ng and they shouldn’尽可能暴露在WiFi中。但它’s harder to grasp potentially the idea that we are also getting EMFs from wires that are in walls, that are not broadcasting anything. So can 您 explain 什么’s going on 那里 and 什么 we need to be aware of?

s variable, but it’肯定在那里。

So 什么 您 want to do is, ideally, 您 want to turn that power off to 您r sleeping area at night and reduce all of 您r wireless forms of emission like we talked about previously. And 那里 are remote cutoff switches that 您 can get to, 您 know, kill switches to help with this process. You can go out to 您r panel, which is typically located in 您r garage or basement, and turn off 您r circuit breakers. But I would have the caveat 那里 that 您 would really only want to do that if 您r circuit breakers are switch rated.

所以不要’t do that, unless 您 have circuit breakers that are switch rated. But when 您 do that, 您 have killed the power to that sleeping area, and that is the best way to eliminate those fields.

        凯蒂:那’s good to know.

ve noticed, and I’ve也注意到了许多对皮肤的好处。 前往joovv.com/wellnessmama。那’s joovv.com/wellnessmama了解更多信息,您也可以通过任何订单获得特别礼物。因此,请查看joovv.com/wellnessmama。

        此播客由kidslovetoswim.com提供给您。 转到kidslovetoswim.com了解如何。

Katie: 和我 know that 您 have kind of a personal backstory with EMFs and how 您 got into this. Because I know, it’不是超级常见。一世’很少有医学专家对电磁场有足够的了解,所以如果’s not too personal of a topic, can 您 actually share kind of 您r own, as a little bit of a deviation from the topic, 您r own journey into why how 您 realize this was so important, and then the solution that 您 have now figured out that is helpful with 什么 您 just talked about?

艾米: Yeah, sure. So, 您 know, like 您 alluded to, it was a, for me, it was a growing, 您 know, ancestral health awareness. It started with the dietary changes for myself and my family, and kids, and, 您 know, and trying to encourage my patients as well. And then it moved into, 您 know, the blue light and that sort of mitigation. And light and EMF are on the same spectrum, and it just made sense to me, just like it did to 您 that it’是不自然的。你知道,如果我们以自然为最终标准,’s the whole point of the ancestral movement, then we need to address, 您 know, EMFs in the same manner.

一开始,我只是扔了主断路器,因为我没有’t know about this body voltage testing and how to be really precise and not have to, 您 know, cut off refrigeration, and heating, and cooling, and fans, and 什么not. So I just did the whole thing. And then after a while, 您 know, 您 would forget and the dogs will be barking in the middle of the night, or 您 have to get up and go to the bathroom and 什么 have 您.

对我来说,很明显,即使对于一个像我这样真正有上进心并且拥有一个简单的单层房屋的人,我也没有’t have to navigate basement stairs and 什么not, that it just wasn’真正具有可持续性。 他有种想法…he scratched my head. He has a background in electronics and industrial control and 什么not, and he thought I was an unusual person to be doing that. Because with his background in electronics, he just wasn’意识到这些问题。

So, we have we have that product that we have, 您 know, just really started marketing here in the past few months, and we’重新尝试为我们提供尽可能多的帮助,并努力使之达到目标’s easy to do. Because it has to integrate in 您r bedtime routine, it can’太难了。

And also, when 您 get one of these, how 您 need to talk to an electrician or whoever’正在安装它,因为正如我所说,我认为’s an area that not a lot of them are familiar with, necessarily. I was lucky that my dad is very well versed in this, but I know not everyone has a dad who can install an EMF kill-switch, so can 您 talk about that implementation process?

Sure. So the kill switch is basically an accessory electrical panel that 您 mount next to 您r main electrical panel, and, like I said, that’通常在车库或地下室。这个小面板 ’s about a foot by foot square. It has a big metal cord that then connects over to 您r main panel. And 您r electrician doesn’t even have to get into the guts of the 什么 we call the EMF kill-switch, which is this little accessory panel, but he just hooks up the wires that come out of 那里 in a really a pretty straightforward way that’很好地概述了良好的说明。

And he hooks them up to the circuits that 您 have determined needed to be cut off at nighttime to bring 您r body voltage as low as possible. And 您 have to go through that body voltage testing process like I briefly talked about earlier, where 您’re holding on to a lead and 您’re testing 您r body voltage in 您r room. But this time instead of moving closer to the wall to see 您r body voltage go up and moving away and seeing 您r body voltage drop, 您 end up turning off different circuits and seeing which ones are in the walls surrounding 您r sleeping area and need to be turned off.

For example, if 您r bedroom is up against a study and 那里’s a common wall, then 您 probably are also going to have to turn off the electricity in the…most of the electricity in the room that, 您 know, that goes to the study, because those wires are running in a common wall. Luckily, in most homes, 您 know, bedrooms are kind of grouped and 您 can take care of more than one bedroom and 您 won’t have to interfere with other areas that have to be lit up for, 您 know, for people who stay up later, that may or may not be an issue.

If 您 need electricity in the middle of the night, 您 hit it again and, once again, in the morning 您 turn everything on, 您 know, right 那里 from 您r bedroom. 有时,我们完全忘记将其关闭,而我’ll wake up and I’ll be like, “Yeah, that was…”

我觉得像是妈妈’s perspective, and certainly, where I was when I first started researching this, it can be so overwhelming, and 您 can get into that analysis paralysis. And like, I hear from people all the time, like, “好吧,一切都会杀了我们,所以我可能什么也不做。” And so I’d love to hear, kind of, as we start to get toward the end, if 您 could just wrap up by explaining why…I mean, 您’ve made such a good case, but why we need to put this into action and why even baby steps are so important to get started and where 您’d建议开始。

And that’发生了什么。 然后’s 什么 I’m trying to…

You really have to be 您 and 您r family’s advocate for health in regard, 您 know, in many areas, in my opinion, but, especially in something like this, I guarantee 您, 您r doctor has had no training. You may have an informed doctor and 您 could speak with him about it but 您’re going to have to educate 您rself, try not to get overwhelmed, the analysis paralysis, and take some form of action and then build off of that. It is highly unlikely that 您’re going to do anything wrong that can hurt 您rself, so don’不要害怕错误。

You know, just keep learning about this and implementing small changes, maybe an occasional big change. Keep working on 您r children so they’不要对技术上瘾。我有他们不认识的人’不想这样做,因为他们’怕他们的少年’s revolt, 您 know, about not having the WiFi on until 2:00 a.m. or something like that.

Katie: I agree. And like 您, I think we’re going to see only more and more, unfortunately, of this, unless we tackle it, and more and more in the literature. And just, this is such a growing topic, and I think 您’re doing an excellent job both in 您r practice and places like now explaining it and getting the word out. And that would be my encouragement to other women and moms as well or anyone listening, is to just start making the baby steps and see because…

你的睡眠好多了,有区别,尤其是区别是我们可以’t see that over time that kids, hopefully, not developing these problems and protecting their DNA as they grow and protecting those voltage-gated bumps that 您 talked about, things we can’t immediately measure, but that are going to have such a big impact on their lives going forward. So I love that 您’重新散布这个词。还有一个问题’d喜欢问,因为我们总结一下是否’是一本最喜欢的书’s really had an impact on 您 or changed 您r life in some way that 您 would recommend?

Michael Pollan’s, “The Omnivore’s Dilemma.” And, 您 know, it’s about…have 您 read that book, Katie?

So, 您 know, it’s about taking kind of a different look at, 您 know, 什么 it means to be a human and being able to eat anything, but maybe not anything and everything is good for 您. 和我 think that kind of was the beginning of my thinking a little bit differently. It was very eye-opening for me. And that sparked my movement into the ancestral sort of movement on food and light and everything. So that was a huge book for me.

我觉得’s one thing I…

艾米:是的,我是说,’s about, 您 know, eat real foods. And nature is the ultimate standard here. 它’是我们的食品标准…it’s our standard for air and water quality, 您 know. 和我 think, 您 know, so it needs to be with our exposure to EMR. We need to think about more, 什么 is more of a natural sort of condition.

Katie: I agree. And lastly, if 那里’s a piece of advice that 您 could spread far and wide, I know 您’ve spread a lot of great advice in this interview, but that 您 could just pass on to a lot of people, 什么 would it be and why?

它’s 什么 inside of 您r home is 什么 counts the most. This is 什么 building biologists talk about. Everybody gets that overwhelmed, “Oh my gosh,” 您 know, “Google’s putting up balloons and my neighbor has, 您 know, 18 routers,”那种感觉,他们只是有点闭嘴,’s 什么 我不’不想看到发生。

它’到那时准备就绪,这些都在wellnessmama.fm中。

而且,就像我说的,我’ll have some springboard links for them to keep researching more and links to the kill-switch in the show notes. You guys can check those out. And thanks to all of 您, of course, for listening, and I hope to see 您 again next time on “起点生活播客。”

If 您’re enjoying these interviews, would 您 please take two 分 utes to 给一个 rating or 在iTunes上查看 for me? Doing this helps more people to find the podcast, which means even more moms and families could benefit from the information. I really appreciate 您r time, and thanks as always for listening.
